Personal Bio

A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Nelda Sims is a retired high school principal, author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. While in Youngstown, she attended Youngstown Public schools and Youngstown State University. Nelda attended YSU as a non-traditional 30-year-old married woman with 2 children and obtained an A.A.S with honors and a B.S. Ed, Cum Laude. She began her career in education in Youngstown Public schools as a Paraeducator, while attending YSU, and after graduation, moved to Maryland. Nelda accepted a position as a special education teacher and instructional team leader and went on to earn a M.Ed in Administration and Supervision, which led to her becoming a high school assistant principal and finally a high school principal. She retired in 2020 as the only Black female high school principal in Howard County Public School System, one of the top performing school systems in the USA.

After retirement, Nelda was one of ten authors in a book titled, Discovering Strength, Hidden in Sight – An Educator’s Perspective. Her chapter, “Unlimited Possibilities” shares her journey as an educator. In honor of her parents, she also established The TJ and Annie Ruth Rushton Legacy Scholarship for minority students attending Youngstown State University and majoring in Education. Nelda attributes much of her success to adhering to the principles and strong foundation provided by her parents.

Lastly, Nelda is a travel agent and enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and friends. Her goal in life is to be a positive role model, encourage, inspire and motivate others.
